Butcher Block is wood that is finished with an oil or lacquer. Oil finishes are typically used in the kitchen with a food safe oil that is required to be reapplied as monthly maintenance. Lacquer finishes are usually used in an office, bathroom, closet, laundry room, etc.   A benefit of butcher block is that if the surface gets scratched or cut, you can simply sand out the marks and reapply the oil or lacquer.
